A budget of carbon cycling in the Belgian coastal zone: relative roles of zooplankton, bacterioplankton and benthos in the utilization of primary production OMA
Joiris, C.R.; Billen, G.; Lancelot, MH.; Daro, M.H.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Bertels, A.; Bossicart, M.; Nijs, J.; Hecq, J.H..
The various biological compartments of the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea were studied since 1971. The synthesis of available data on carbon cycling includes phytoplankton biomass and activities (particulate and dissolved primary production, respiration) , zooplankton biomass and activities (grazing, respiration) and planktonic and benthic microbial heterotrophic activities. These various carbon flux estimates allow the development of an overall budget of carbon cycling. This budget shows the importance of microbial (planktonic and benthic) heterotrophs versus zooplankton in the utilization of primary production. Comparison with literature data suggests that this could be a general feature of coastal, as opposed to open sea ecosystems.

Autoradiography as a tool in primary production research OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
Autoradiography of C-14 labelled phytoplankton collected onto a millipore filter allows the determination of the number of photosynthetically active cells in a water sample and thus gives useful information on the standing crop in primary production studies.

Données sur l'écologie de l'estuaire du Tamar (Plymouth) OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The estuary of the Tamar has been surveyed from March to September 1968. The distribution and the variation of temperature, salinity and major nutrients (phosphate, nitrate and silicate) has been studied and the connection with some water circulation features discussed. The distribution of the various groups of phytoplankton in the estuary has been investigated and a comparison with open sea data carried out.

Dynamic patterns of dissolved nitrogen in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Goeyens, L.; Dehairs, F.A.; Dedeurwaerder, H.; Decadt, G..
Spatial and temporal variations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) have been assessed in onshore and offshore areas of the Southern Bight on the basis of several years' measurements. They indicate that both the residual flow lines and DIN isoconcentration lines run parallel with the coast except in the vicinity of important freshwater discharge points such as the Scheldt estuary. Evidence was found that the seasonal DIN oscillations are not created through fluctuations in input conditions at the lateral boundaries, despite considerable fluctuations in these inputs which include the English Channel (from 500 tons(t) N day-1 in June up to approximately 2000 t N day-1 in February) and also rivers such as the...

Ecological modelling of the North Sea OMA
Fransz, H.G.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Radach, G..
North Sea ecosystem models published in accessible literature are partitioned into groups with respect to their emphasis on significance and detail of different trophic levels of the ecosystem. These subsets are treated separately in the three main chapters, which deal with relationships with physical dynamics, lower trophic level interactions and higher trophic level interactions. They are preceded by chapters that introduce the scope of the models, the history of modelling approaches, main purposes and specific aims, general aspects of internal structure, and modelling techniques applied. The main chapters compare the process descriptions characteristic of the subsets of models, and discuss aims and results with emphasis on significance and contribution...

Nitrogen cycling and budget in Belgian coastal waters: North Sea areas with and without river inputs OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P.; Pichot, G.; Ozer, J.; Adam, Y.A.; Baeyens, W.F.J..
The coastal sea off Belgium has been extensively studied for a number of years on a multidisciplinary basis. Thus the stocks within the system's various compartments as well as the carbon or nitrogen fluxes between them resulting from biological activity at several trophic levels have been measured. Further, the tidal and residual circulations have been investigated and modeled in addition to the erosive properties of the flow. There are strong differences between the more coastal part of this area and the open sea. In particular, inputs from rivers and channels seem to exert an influence beyond what could normally be expected in coastal areas.Adequate modelling of the nitrogen cycle in such a diverse environment demanded a fine approach, including a...

On primary production in the South Bight of the North Sea OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The area of the North Sea next to the Belgian and Dutch coasts has been surveyed since January 1971. The photosynthetic capacity (potential production) of samples collected at 63 stations and 4 depths has been measured using the 14C techniques. The homogeneity of the water column was demonstrated almost everywhere. A general pattern of decrease of the potential production from the coast to the open sea was demonstrated in all seasons. Figures ranged from 3 to 30 mg C m-3 h-1. Primary production was also determined both by calculations, using the Steemann Nielsen (1952) formula, and by <i>in situ</i> measurements. The higher turbidity near the coast has proved to limit...

On the unusual patterns of phosphate vertical distribution in the Tamar estuary OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
Chemical investigations in the Tamar estuary (Plymouth, Great Britain) have revealed marked variations of phosphate content in the water column. This pattern was usually not matched by that of salinity. The origin of the phenomenon and its possible use for the computation of the flushing time of the estuary are discussed.

Seasonal variation of phytoplankton populations and primary production in the Sluice dock at Ostend (Belgium) OMA
Mommaerts-Billiet, F.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Daro, M.H..
The Sluice Dock at Ostend has been investigated for phytoplankton populations and primary production for the years 1971 and 1972. Nannoplankton is demonstrated to take a prominent part in pelagic primary production. The seasonal cycle shows a short spring outburst of <i>Eutreptiella marina</i> da Cunha followed by a depressed production period (May). Summer is the most productive; several nannoplankton populations appear successively in this period. The depression in May is discussed in relation to zooplankton activity.

The calculation of particulate primary production in a stratified body of water using a modification of the Vollenweider formula OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
A model which integrates particulate primary production over time (light-day) and depth (euphonic layer) was used extensively for calculations of the primary production results of the Fladen Ground Experiment (FLEX'76), and is described here in detail. The photosynthesis-light relationship occupies a central position in the computational scheme. The choice of an adequate relationship (here, a variant of the Vollenweider's (1965) expression), the properties of such a formula, and the relevant parameters are discussed in the paper. The proposed approach is useful whenever specific problems imply a reduction to elemental processes, as it was the case during the Fladen Ground Experiment. Thus, the difficulty of integrating primary production over a...

The relative importance of nannoplankton in the North Sea primary production OMA
Mommaerts, J.-P..
The South Bight of the North Sea has been investigated for the photosynthetic capacity of net- and nannoplankton, the fractional filtration method being used simultaneously with the C14 technique. The water appeared to be well mixed so that no important variations occurred along the vertical profile. The horizontal distribution of net-/nannoplankton ratios showed, however, a zonation pattern with netplankton-dominant activity near to the coast and nannoplankton-dominant activity further off. The interference of the River Scheldt has also been demonstrated. The various implications of the 'metabolic structure' of the phytoplankton community demonstrated by the fractionation method are discussed.
